Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to fourth grade! I am excited to have each of you this year and I look forward to a wonderful year for all of us! My new fourth graders can look forward to a memorable year filled with many new challenges. Here is some important information about our class.
Communication- The most important thing to having a successfully run classroom is good communication between the teacher, students, and parents! Please do not hesitate to contact me if there are concerns or problems, or even if you are happy with the way things are going. I will likewise send communication home as needed, including positive things your children are doing in the classroom. Email is a great way to get in touch with me, as it is hard to return phone messages during the day. As long as the lines of communication are open, we can accomplish anything!!!
Attendance- Instruction will begin at 8:10. If students can generally arrive around 7:55, this will give them the proper time to unpack and prepare their materials for the day. Students arriving after 8:10 should stop by the office to get a tardy slip before coming to class. Anyone who arrives after 11:40 is considered absent for the day, since they are at school less than half of the school day. Students need to bring a note within two days upon the return to school following an absence. Dismissal for the day is at 2:40.
Lunch- Fourth grade is scheduled to eat lunch from 12:05-12:35. After the students eat, they go outside for lunch recess, which is about ten minutes long.
Snack- We will have a snack around 10:00 in the morning. Students are encouraged to bring a healthy snack and can bring a drink such as a juice box. I would like no open cans of soda or drink bottles, besides water. Students are always allowed to have a bottle or container of water on their desk all day, especially during these hot summer months!
Special Classes- Our specials’ schedule changes every three weeks. We have Technology, Science, Art, Music, and PE. Our special time is 1:55-2:40 each day. I will let you know in my newsletter, the day we will have PE, so students can wear the proper shoes. It’s a good idea to have them pack an old pair of tennis shoes in their book bags, in case they forget.
Monday Folders- Work from the previous week, a weekly newsletter, and any school notices will be in the Monday folder. Any paper with a number score on it is recorded in the grade book. Practice work will have a check/check plus/check minus on it, or a large P. Please take the time each Monday to review work with your child, read the newsletter, and return the folder on Tuesday. This is the parent and the child’s responsibility. Vocabulary- Students will have a new vocabulary list each week. I want to make the learning new vocabulary meaningful for the students, so they are not just memorizing the words for the test, but they actually use them in their Writing. Each week with a list, your child will have a homework assignment every night, and a test on Friday. We won’t do a vocabulary list on short weeks, or track out weeks.
Homework- Homework will be assigned to review/reinforce what was taught in class that day. Students will write assignments in their agendas. Fourth graders are still of an age to need parental reminders and assistance to see that homework assignments are completed and turned in on time. Parents will need to check their agenda each night, and sign at the bottom, indicating that you saw the homework completed. In our handbook, it states that 4th graders can have up to 50 minutes of homework a night, so if your child spends 50 quality minutes on an assignment and doesn’t finish, please jot a note in their agenda and they won’t lose any privileges. The students will usually have Math, Reading, and Vocabulary. They can earn a Fun Friday recess award every three weeks for completing homework on time and being responsible by bringing it in.
Classroom Rules- Our class rules are: “HES” Have respect for all, Everyone is accountable, Show safe and responsible actions. Please see the 4th grade discipline plan flier in the Monday folder. When a student breaks a classroom rule, they will lose Dojo points. They will earn Dojo points for good behavior. Awards and privileges will be given for points at the end of a week. I hope we can all work together to keep the best atmosphere possible in our classroom.
Classroom Procedures- I like to keep my classroom organized, and the routines clear. Children work well when they know what’s expected of them!
Class rewards- I always love to spot good behavior, so the class can earn two types of rewards. The first, a whole class reward, will be earning 10 stars on a 97% positive pervcentage on our class Dojo for the day. We will vote on a reward for the class. Second, the top positive point scorers for a week will be able to visit the treasure bin on Monday morning. This will be tracked on our Class Dojo. I encourage parents to visit this site to track how your child is doing each day. I am looking for respectful and on task behavior.
